Kitchen Floor Ideas on a Budget

From realistic stone effect and smart, neutral-coloured tiles to clever tile combinations, we’ve got your budget kitchen floor covered.

White floor tiles

With their timeless qualities, white tiles are one of the most popular choices for kitchen floors. Transformative, space-enhancing and brilliant for brightening a room, dazzling white tiles are often among the more affordable options too.

Smooth, plain-coloured tiles are usually the cheapest. Search for large tiles to help your space look bigger or get creative with smaller square tiles. White tiles are beautiful but white grout can be tricky to maintain so we suggest opting for an off-white, dark grey or even black grout. The contrast will be striking and it won’t discolour.

Combination floor tiles

If you’ve set your heart on a certain tile but it’s going to blow your budget, how about combining two different floor surfaces? Try pairing cheaper tiles with more expensive ones or you can transition between tile and wood or tile and laminate, allowing you to have the tiles of your dreams whilst creating a beautiful, multifunctional floor.

Hexagonal tiles are one of the most popular choices for floor transitions as they can be blended in many different ways with spectacular results. You can also blend subway tiles or keep it simpler with more conventionally shaped square or rectangular tiles.

Subway tiles

These popular tiles are most often used for walls but subway tiles can create beautiful floors too. Part of the popularity of these iconic tiles lies in the many ways they can be laid. From traditional herringbone to more unusual basketweave designs, small tiles offer many possibilities.

Opt for durable porcelain tiles as they’ll offer a higher slip resistance than regular ceramic tiles. You’ll also need to ensure the tiles are thick enough to withstand regular footfall.

Concrete effect tiles

Polished concrete floors can look incredible but they’re also one of the most expensive flooring options. Get the stylish industrial look for much less with gorgeous concrete effect tiles.

Concrete-looking porcelain tiles are highly durable, easier to install than concrete and won’t crack, chip or discolour.  They’re an excellent option for large, open-plan spaces, and their neutral tones go with all colours of kitchen cabinets.

Beige porcelain floor tiles

Warm neutral tones can be an excellent option if you’re searching for tiles on a budget. Softer than white, beige tiles are attractive, practical and available in various sizes.

Look for mid-sized tiles in the same size for the least expensive option. Simple beige tiles might not make the same statement as patterned or stone effect ones, but well-laid simple floor tiles can make a huge difference to the look and feel of a kitchen area.

Stone effect floor tiles

A little more expensive than plain-coloured floor tiles, stone-effect porcelain tiles are a realistic alternative to natural stone. Featuring printed images from real stone, the tiles can be hard to distinguish from the real thing.

Stone effect tiles vary widely in price, with the highest quality ones costing the same, sometimes more than natural stone. High-end stone effect tiles usually contain a wide range of patterns, creating a realistic finish. Try to choose tiles with a few different patterns in the range if your budget allows and take care not to place the same tiles next to each other (or rotate them if you do) for the best effect.

Checkerboard floor tiles

One of the most distinctive and versatile floor designs, the checkerboard floor pattern has graced our floors for millennia. Loved in equal amounts by the ancient Romans, the Victorians and 1950s homeowners, this iconic design has never really gone out of style.

Creating a floor from two different tile types can be a savvy move if you’re on a budget, Look for end-of-line tiles or simply choose the two least expensive square floor tiles you can find and pair them to spectacular effect.

Black and white is always a winning match but you can have fun combining other colours too, beige and white and grey and white are equally gorgeous, subtler combinations.

What is the best floor covering for a kitchen?

Our kitchen floors work hard. From splashes and spills to muddy paws and heavy footfall, the kitchen floor sees it all.

There are many different types of kitchen floor covering, from lino and laminate to engineered wood, polished concrete, stone and porcelain tiles. Tiles provide one of the most effective kitchen floor coverings. They’re durable, water resistant, won’t warp, rot or discolour and, when looked after well, can last a lifetime.

Although tiles may not be the cheapest floor option, they vary hugely in price and most tile suppliers will stock inexpensive ranges. We’ve come up with some clever tricks that can help you get the luxe look for less.

What is the cheapest type of kitchen flooring?

There are many ways to get a gorgeous-looking kitchen floor without blowing the budget. Although materials like vinyl are the cheapest option for kitchen flooring, they won’t be as durable as porcelain tiles. Tiles vary hugely in price and most stockists will have several budget ranges to choose from. You can also restrict the tiles to smaller areas of your kitchen, look for end-of-line tiles and combine different tile types to keep costs down.

What tiles are best for a kitchen floor?

Porcelain tiles are the most durable tiles for kitchen floors. Not only are they resistant to chips, scratches and stains, but they come in a vast range of shapes, sizes, colours and finishes.

What are the most affordable tiles?

Ceramic tiles are the least expensive tiles. These tiles can be more prone to cracking and chipping than porcelain tiles in areas of heavy footfall so you’ll need to weigh up the cost of potentially replacing cheaper tiles versus spending a little more for tougher tiles.

You can save money by combining different floor surfaces, for example, tile and laminate, using tiles over a small area and looking for cheaper end-of-line tile ranges.

Atlas Ceramics stocks a range of budget-friendly porcelain tiles for kitchen floors. We also stock a variety of coloured grouts and suitable adhesives. Browse our selection yourself or call one of our helpful experts for advice.
