What are the different types of tiles available?

The use of tiles goes back centuries and their popularity has not faded over time.

If anything tiles are becoming more and more popular within both domestic and commercial properties providing hygienic solutions for bathrooms, kitchens and wet rooms.

From kitchen splash backs to wet room floors, tiles provide unique, functional solutions that can stand the test of time and even help to increase the value of your property.

So what are the different types of tiles available?

You will find that all types of tiles are quite easy to maintain, which is why they are great for bathrooms and kitchens as they do not trap smells and dust like carpets or wallpapers do.

Tiles are a great investment, they are not only practical, but they look stunning.

For indoor use, ceramic tiles are a great option.

  • They can be used on both walls and floors (although not all ceramic tiles are not suitable for floors)
  • This makes ceramic tiles a good option for kitchens or utility rooms when spillages may be likely.
  • Glazed tiles provide a fantastic wipe clean surface whilst unglazed ceramic tiles boast slip resistant qualities as well as withstanding heavy foot traffic making them popular within hallways, kitchens and even areas such as conservatories.

Porcelain

Made from pure materials, porcelain tiles are fired at extremely high temperatures which makes them exceptionally hard wearing and robust.

You can find porcelain tiles in a number of finishes, the most popular being matt, gloss, polished or glazed and they can be used both outdoors and indoors.

Very occasionally some porcelain tiles need to be sealed before they are grouted and after in order to retain their stunning appearance and their magnificent qualities, however the majority do not require any further maintenance  Why not find out the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles.

Mosaic Tiles

Mosaic Tiles are absolutely perfect for creating stunning feature walls, adding a splash of colour to a space or tiling a room completely.

They can be used to create superb decorative effects within any room and mosaics are available in a range of materials such as glass, natural stone, metal or metallic and ceramic and porcelain mosaic tiles allowing you to play with texture and design, so you can create a really great feature wall that offers tactile qualities.
